Glossary
Magnetic Field: The
Magnet: An object that has its own magnetic field and can attract or repel other magnetic materials. Magnets can be natural or artificial. Earth’s Magnetic Field: The magnetic field created by the movement of molten metal in Earth’s outer core. This field acts as a «magnetic blanket,» surrounding the planet and protecting it from solar radiation. Magnetic Force: The force that acts between magnets or magnetic materials. It can be an attractive or repulsive force, depending on the positions and distances between the objects. Iron Filings: Small iron particles used to visually represent magnetic field lines. When placed near a magnet, they form a pattern showing the shape and direction of the magnetic field. Bar Magnet: A simple cylindrical or rectangular magnet used for demonstrations and experiments with magnetic fields. It has two poles: north and south. Core: The central part of Earth, composed of molten iron and nickel. The movement of these masses generates Earth’s magnetic field. Compass: A navigational device that uses Earth’s magnetic field to indicate directions. The compass needle aligns with Earth’s magnetic field lines, pointing to magnetic north. around a magnet where it a force on other magnetic materials. It can be visualized with iron filings that align along the magnetic field lines.
