Glossary

Term Description
Polymer macro molecules formed by union of monomers
Monomer atoms or small molecules that bond together to form more complex structures such as polymers
Proteins large biomolecules and macromolecules that comprise one or more long chains of amino acid residues
Amino acids molecules used by all living things to make proteins
Fats nutrients in food that the body uses to build cell membranes, nerve tissue (including the brain), and hormones
Fatty acids the building blocks of the fat in our bodies and in the food we eat
Nucleic acids large biomolecules that play essential roles in all cells and viruses
Nucleotides organic molecules composed of a nitrogenous base, a pentose sugar, and a phosphate
Carbohydrates a biomolecule consisting of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms, usually with a hydrogen–oxygen atom ratio of 2:1
Monosaccharides the simplest carbohydrates that cannot be broken down by hydrolysis into smaller carbohydrate molecules
Polysaccharides long chains of carbohydrate molecules, composed of several smaller monosaccharides

  1. Essentially, monomers are the building blocks of polymers, which are more complex type of molecules. Match polymers with monomers.
