In a global world, a central language to which everyone can easily communicate empirical – English. Teaching English to ESL learners is more than just developing their linguistic and communicative competence; it also involves transmitting knowledge about the target culture. In classrooms, as we teach the language, we should also automatically teach culture. For to be fully developed, it is empirical that the learners have a fully developed and engaged intra-cultural awareness.
Cultural awareness is fundamental to CLIL approach. At the core of CLIL Pedagogy is the integration of content and language, and with cognition and culture. Apart from language and contentrelated skills, CLIL also promotes thinking skills as well as intracultural awareness. Since CLIL promotes cooperative learning, incorporating contexts and content which enrich the learners’ understanding of their own culture is the key to understanding others’ culture. This approach will strengthen cross-cultural awareness and intercultural communication skills, thus promoting global citizenship.
This module, “Kazakh Life in Physics”, presents key Kazakh Culture Elements and the Key Physics concepts that they can be incorporated in. Brief historical and cultural background are also included. Finally, suggested tasks like problem-solving exercises, and tasks intended for the development of learners’ listening, speaking and writing skills are also included. Through this, we hope that in our classroom, we do not only teach English language, but we also tackle the richness and diversity of cultures.
